Do You Need an Operator’s Licence?

You usually need a Goods Vehicle Operator’s Licence if you:

• Use a goods vehicle with a gross plated weight over 3.5 tonnes, or an unladen weight over 1,525kg (where no plated weight is shown),
  and are transporting goods either:
  
  

  • For hire or reward, or

  • In connection with your own trade or business

• Operate internationally for hire or reward, using a vehicle (or combination) with a maximum laden weight over 2.5 tonnes

• Use a vehicle and trailer combination where the combined maximum laden weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes, or
  2.5 tonnes if transporting goods for hire or reward within Europe
